Healthcare Workers Call for Radical Changes to Health Care to Treat Pandemic Burnout

Nearly 40 health-worker organizations met for an emergency summit and concluded that "Canada’s ailing health systems need some drastic intervention from federal and provincial governments if there is any hope of reviving them post-pandemic." “The real shared experience across health-care workers and professionals is that the level of burnout is to a point now where it’s really starting to threaten the sustainability of the system,” said Canadian Medical Association president Dr. Katharine Smart.

Ontario Making Historic Investment in Provincial Nursing Workforce

The Ontario government is investing $763 million to provide eligible full-time, part-time and casual nursing staff across the province with a lump sum retention incentive of up to $5,000. The payment is intended to help stabilize the current nursing workforce during this critical time to ensure patients continue to access the health care they need. Nurses eligible to receive the payment include the ones that work in hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes, community care, and more.

Ontario Training More Health Care Workers at Indigenous Institutes

The Ontario government is investing $34 million over four years to increase enrolment in nursing and personal support worker (PSW) programs at six Indigenous Institutes. Funding will help provide culturally responsive education and training pathways for learners. This investment will help participating Indigenous Institutes to expand existing programs or create new ones to support the training of approximately 340 practical nurses, 60 registered nurses and 400 PSWs over four years.
