WHO Revises Variant Nomenclature to Monitor Omicron's Swift Changes

The WHO is updating its naming system for COVID-19 variants to better reflect the dominance and evolution of the Omicron variant. Omicron and its sublineages have largely replaced other variants since February 2022. The new system will classify Omicron sublineages as variants under monitoring, variants of interest, or variants of concern. The previous naming system lacked the necessary detail to compare the various Omicron-related viruses, which now account for over 98% of available sequences.
