Last July 28, 2023, Canada reported 1,503 cases, slightly higher than WHO's 1,496 due to varied criteria. Canada ranks tenth globally; the U.S. leads at 30,446 cases. In July, 1,020 new global cases arose; 77.2% were from the Western Pacific Region, primarily China.

A new COVID-19 variant, EG.5 emerges, underlining ongoing global mutations. EG.5 was added to WHO monitoring on July 19. EG.5 constitutes 14.6% of UK cases and 17.3% of US cases. Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an expert in infectious diseases at University Health Network in Toronto, anticipates the emergence of EG.5 cases in Canada shortly, possibly even if they have not surfaced yet. “It's probably everywhere and if it isn't everywhere, it'll be everywhere,” he told CTVNews.ca in a phone interview Monday.
