Master’s to PhD programs in nursing not only empower nurses to take on leadership roles but also equip them with the necessary skills to conduct groundbreaking research and implement evidence-based practices.
Nurses with doctorates transform healthcare with their advanced training and practical experience. Their expertise helps identify practice gaps, create innovative solutions, and advance the field of nursing and the health sciences.
Graduate nursing education is becoming more appealing and rewarding as the demand for advanced nursing expertise continues to increase. In this article, we will explore the reasons why obtaining a doctorate in nursing is not only a worthwhile endeavour but also a potential game-changer for both personal and professional growth.
While discussions surrounding the requirement of a doctorate degree for nurse practitioners have been ongoing in the United States since 2011, with speculations that it may become mandatory by 2025, the situation in Canada appears to be different.
“Canada is far from adopting any similar process at this point,” says Dr. Gina Pittman, BScN, MN-NP, PhD, Assistant Professor and NP Clinical Placement Coordinator when asked about the possibility of Canada adopting the same health policy. She further adds that, in the Canadian healthcare system, the focus remains on filling the existing demand for nurse practitioners, particularly in underserved areas, to ensure the equitable access to primary health care. The regulatory requirements for nurse practitioners were updated relatively recently, in 2012, when completing a master of nursing program became the minimum educational requirement for entry into the profession.
Given the ongoing efforts to address the shortage of nurse practitioners and the recent implementation of the master’s degree requirement, it is unlikely that Canada will mandate a doctoral degree for nurse practitioners in the near future. The priority lies in ensuring adequate access to healthcare services and meeting the current demand for qualified nurse practitioners.
While pursuing a doctoral program in nursing may not be an immediate requirement for nurse practitioners in Canada, it is worth noting that the pursuit of this graduate education can still be a valuable endeavour for Canadian nurses. Doctoral degrees in nursing can open doors to leadership roles, academic positions, and opportunities for advancing nursing research. It can also bring a positive impact to health promotion and in building and maintaining robust health systems in the country.
Obtaining a doctorate in nursing equips individuals with the necessary knowledge and credentials to transition from clinical practice to academia. A doctoral degree opens up academic career paths for nurses, such as teaching, research, or administration. This transition not only offers new professional opportunities but also allows nurses to shape the future generation of healthcare professionals by imparting their expertise and contributing to the development of nursing curricula.
Pursuing a doctorate in nursing is a testament to a nurse’s commitment to personal and professional development. The rigorous academic journey fosters critical thinking, research skills, and a deep understanding of nursing theory and practice. This advanced level of education can hone and demonstrate one’s commitment and skills to become nurse leaders, or occupy specialized role like becoming nurse scholars or nurse scientists.
Nurses with doctoral degrees play a crucial role in advancing nursing science by conducting original research and contributing to the body of knowledge in the field. Their expertise in research methodologies and data analysis enables them to identify gaps in existing practices, explore new areas of inquiry, and develop evidence-based solutions to complex healthcare challenges. Through their research, nurses with doctorates fill critical gaps in healthcare, thus improving patient care and advancing the nursing profession.
Ultimately, the pursuit of a doctorate in nursing is driven by a desire to enhance patient care and healthcare delivery. Nurses with doctoral degrees possess the knowledge and skills to implement evidence-based practices, develop innovative care models, and influence policy decisions that shape the healthcare system. Their expertise and leadership contribute to improving a patient’s health outcomes, increasing operational efficiency, and fostering a culture of excellence within healthcare organizations.
When asked what words of encouragement she can give to Canadian nurse practitioners interested in doctoral studies but intimidated by the extra years of study, Dr. Pittman says, “I would suggest that a PhD is completely doable. We have an NP in our PhD program here in Windsor. She applied directly after her NP program.” Dr. Pittman was referring to Ms. Emily Bohdal, a nurse practitioner currently enrolled and completing her studies at the University of Windsor.
